Toilet in Air Itam Market gets five-star rating from MPPP

THE Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) has spent over RM1mil to upgrade seven public toilets on the island last year.

Its Public Health Standing Committee alternate chairman Ong Ah Teong said public toilets at wet markets in Batu Maung, Air Itam, Batu Lanchang, Jelutong, Pulau Tikus, Lebuh Cecil and Batu Uban’s Pulau Emas were upgraded with the money.

“The upgrading project has been completed in most of the wet markets except in Jelutong and Pulau Tikus.

“The improvement on the two wet markets are expected to be completed by early next year,” he said after a visit to three public toilets at Lebuh Victoria, Lorong Kulit and Weld Quay recently.

Ong added that they received less complaints about public toilets following the upgrading.

“All the island’s 60 public toilets passed the council’s grading system, in which one (Air Itam) received a five-star grading.

“Points were given based on several aspects including cleanliness, existing structure and facilities,” he said, adding that RM300,000 would be allocated next year to upgrade more public toilets.
